The Different Types of Cranial Prosthetic Units

When it comes to hair loss, finding the right solution can be both emotional and overwhelming. That’s where cranial prosthetics come in. A cranial prosthetic unit is more than just a wig—it’s a custom-made medical-grade hair replacement system designed specifically for individuals experiencing hair loss due to medical conditions such as alopecia, chemotherapy, lupus, trichotillomania, or scalp trauma.

At She Stylez, we’re passionate about educating and empowering our clients, helping them regain confidence and feel like themselves again. Let’s break down the different types of cranial prosthetic units available and what makes each one unique.

1. Skin with Lace Front

This hybrid unit features a thin, skin-like base that mimics the natural scalp, combined with a lace front to create an undetectable hairline. The skin base allows for hair to be injected, giving the illusion that it’s growing directly from the scalp, while the lace front offers a soft and natural transition at the hairline.

Best for:

• Clients looking for realism and a natural hairline

• Individuals experiencing hair loss related to alopecia (with the exception of alopecia totalis or alopecia universalis)

• Those who prefer minimal maintenance with natural styling options

• Clients who may or may not want to use adhesive—application can be done with or without glue, depending on personal preference and fit

2. Full Skin Base

A full skin base prosthetic offers a realistic scalp appearance from every angle. Hair is injected into a thin, skin-like material, giving the impression of natural hair growth in all directions. These units adhere securely and are often chosen for their durability, smooth finish, and lifelike appearance.

Best for:

• Clients with full scalp hair loss

• Individuals experiencing hair loss due to traumatic events, stress, or trichotillomania

• Clients undergoing cancer treatments, including chemotherapy or radiation therapy

• Those seeking a low-maintenance, extended-wear solution

Note: While ideal for these situations, full skin base units are not limited to one type of hair loss—they’re versatile and can be customized for a wide range of medical and non-medical hair loss concerns.

3. Full Lace Base

This type of unit is constructed entirely from lace, providing breathability, comfort, and flexibility. It offers a natural look with the freedom to part the hair in any direction and style it up or down. Full lace bases are lightweight, making them ideal for sensitive scalps and clients who want a natural, undetectable finish.

Best for:

• Clients who want full styling versatility

• Hot or humid climates (thanks to the breathability)

• Individuals who prioritize comfort and a realistic appearance

Note: Due to the maintenance required—such as delicate handling, adhesive reapplication, and proper cleaning—I generally recommend full lace units to clients who are already familiar with lace fronts and have prior experience maintaining them.

These units are not limited to one type of hair loss and can be customized to suit a wide range of medical and non-medical hair loss conditions.

4. Lace or Monofilament with Polyurethane (PU) Edge

This unit combines the natural look of lace or monofilament with a PU edge for added structure and secure adhesion. The lace or mono center offers decent breathability and scalp realism, while the PU perimeter allows for easy application with tape or adhesive.

Best for:

• Clients who need secure, long-lasting attachment

• Individuals looking for a balance of comfort and durability

• Clients who prefer flexibility in how they wear their unit

• Those experiencing various types of hair loss, both medical and non-medical

Additional Insight:

Lace/Mono units are the most durable of all cranial prosthetics. Because they are built with heavier, more resilient materials, they can withstand extended use and repeated wear. While they may not appear as natural as lace or skin-based units due to the density and structure of the materials, they are an excellent choice for clients seeking longevity and reliability.

These units are not limited to one type of hair loss and are commonly recommended for clients who need a durable, everyday solution.
